Edward Ousselin (Modern and Classical Languages) has received the “Palmes académiques” award from the French Ministry of Education. The Ordre des Palmes Académiques (Order of Academic Palms) is an Order of Chivalry of France to academics and educators. The order was originally created by Napoleon to honour eminent members of the University of Paris. It was re-established on Oct. 4, 1955, by President René Coty, and is one of the world's oldest civil awards.

Nominations are now being accepted for the Women of Color Empowerment Award, which recognizes an individual who demonstrates excellence in contributions to women of color while enhancing his or her understanding and sensitivity to issues and concerns for women of color. All enrolled students, faculty and staff of Western Washington University are eligible to be nominated. The Project Development Award program was established to encourage and enable faculty members to obtain significant funding from external agencies by providing release time to develop fundable proposals. Western Washington University men's basketball point guard Morris Anderson has been named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for Dec. 27 through Jan. 2.
A 6-foot-3 senior from Federal Way, Anderson scored 35 points and also had 13 assists, eight rebounds and five steals in leading the Vikings to wins over Dixie State, 81-73, and SUNY-Geneseo, 75-63.
The victories extended Western's winning streak to 12, the fourth longest in school history and the sixth longest in GNAC history.
Clint Spiegel (Chemistry) recently was awarded a grant for $44,661 by the Research Corporation to continue his work on the structure and function of the bacterial ribosome. Understanding the molecular basis of ribosome function is important for understanding how genetic information is expressed and has direct implications in the development of novel antibiotic approaches.
John Gilbertson (Chemistry) recently received a Single Investigator Cottrell College Science Award for $44,965 from the Research Corporation to continue his work on developing environmentally friendly small molecules that mimic the biologically important enzyme nitrogenase. These target molecules are important in studying the production of ammonia (a necessary nutrient in growing crops that is responsible for feeding more than 40 percent of the world's population).
Sidney Hammond, 75, of Bellingham, developed an environmental education program for the city's schools, including the Gordon L. Carter Environmental Education Site. Hammond was an elementary school principal in Bellingham and held other posts, retiring in 1992 after nearly 32 years in education.
For his work, he received the Award for Professional Excellence from WWU's Woodring College of Education, and was named an honorary tribal elder by Lummi Nation. He died Nov. 13.

Western Washington women's soccer players Kylie Broadbent and Kelly Irving were both second-team selections on the 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II West Region All-Star Team announced Monday, Nov. 30.
Irving, a senior midfielder, had eight assists this season, tying a school career record that had stood for 25 years with a four-year total of 26. She also scored three goals, all game winners.
Western Washington University has won the 2009 Green Cleaning Grand Award for Schools and Universities from American School and University magazine, the top award given in the category nationally.
"We're honored to receive this prestigious award and to be recognized as the national leader in green cleaning. Western, which buys 100 percent of its electrical energy from green sources, was ranked eighth out of 20 colleges and universities.
All the schools on the list are part of the EPA's Green Power Partnership, a voluntary program that can be joined by a variety of organizations and companies. Western is the only university in the state on the list.
Western Washington University’s student-produced magazine “The Planet” won two awards in a recent national contest put on by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).
The magazine won third place for general excellence among 17 entries and received an honorable mention for design among 15 entries.
