In "Knitted," an essay in her new collection "Blessing of the Animals" (Eastern Washington University Press: 158 pp., $17.95 paper), Brenda Miller reflects on knitting lessons, Zen meditation and the Vermeer print that hangs on her office wall. "[K]nitting," she writes, "turns time into something that can be measured, shaped into something tactile, with heft and beauty and usefulness." Miller might as well be referring to her writing, which achieves a similar effect.

Jeffrey Grimm (Psychology) co-authored a paper with undergraduate students John Harkness and Sierra Webb that appeared in the latest issue of the journal "Pharmacology." C.A. Ross (Geology research associate) and J. R. P. Ross (Biology, emeritus) had their paper "Paleontology, a Tool to Resolve Late Paleozoic Structural and Depositional Histories" published in "Geologic Problem solving with Microfossils: A volume in honor of Garry Jones," Special Publication 93. The paper appears on pages 95 to 109 of the book, edited by T.D. Demchuk and A.C. Gary. The book is published by the Society for Sedimentary Geology.

Christopher Wise (English) is editor of a new book scheduled to be released on Dec. 15.

The book includes an essay by WWU graduate student Matt Atwood, who graduated with his M.A. in English last year. Atwood wrote the essay on Azmi Bishara for an independent study he took from Wise.

The book also includes an essay from former WWU faculty member Fallou Ngom, a faculty member at WWU when the project was first started who then took a job at Boston University.

Daniel Larner (Fairhaven College) is the author of the lead article in the fall 2009 issue of "The Eugene O'Neill Review." "O'Neill's Endings: The Tragicomedy of Distant Echoes," the third in a series of articles on tragedy and comedy in O'Neill's work, explores the ways in which O'Neill's late plays reveal comic structures where they are most tragic, and how those comic structures are shadowed by tragedy.

An exciting new book, "Reason to Believe," tackles an important question: is religious belief reasonable? Of course, the so-called New Atheists, such as Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris, energetically say, "No!" Many others, including some believers, insist that faith is utterly beyond reasoned argument. Faith, they declare, is believing something that reason tells you can't be so. In this way they think they shield belief from rational criticism.

Western alumna (and bird censuser) Marci Durocher did the painting of the western grebe on the cover (third bird down) of the journal, and Fairhaven alumnus and current Huxley Geographic Information Systems specialist Stefan Freelan made the map.
