Evelyn Buckley of Stanwood celebrated her 103rd birthday on Dec. 13. She was born Dec. 13, 1906, in Outlook in south-central Washington. She now lives at the Warm Beach Retirement Center in Stanwood. Buckley received her teaching certificate from Bellingham Normal School, her bachelor of arts degree from Western Washington University and her master's degree in education from the University of Washington when she was in her 30s.

Sidney Hammond, 75, of Bellingham, developed an environmental education program for the city's schools, including the Gordon L. Carter Environmental Education Site. Hammond was an elementary school principal in Bellingham and held other posts, retiring in 1992 after nearly 32 years in education. For his work, he received the Award for Professional Excellence from WWU's Woodring College of Education, and was named an honorary tribal elder by Lummi Nation. He died Nov. 13.

The elementary education professors at Western Washington University wanted to start their own scholarship to support students who want to become elementary school teachers. When they discussed who the scholarship should be named for, who it should honor, they decided in a snap: Rob Brand. "He's such a fixture here in elementary ed," said Chris Ohana, chair of the Elementary Education Department at Woodring College of Education. "He has such a passion for kids, and for preparing teachers."

As more information becomes available, the more it is evident that none of us can learn the same way. We all have different learning styles. But some have trouble grasping even the basics of learning. Many years ago, a student may have been called stupid or slow. But now, the problem is usually diagnosed as a learning disability. Nathan Broweleit, who for two years was substitute teaching at McFarland Middle School, began this year as the special education resource room specialist for McFarland.

Even as they teach, many teachers have a strong desire to continue their education. After a rigorous learning process, 10 Snoqualmie Valley School District teachers earned National Board Certification in 2009, bringing the total number of certified teachers in the district to 16. “It had a huge challenge this year,” said Chief Kanim Middle School teacher Allison Means. “On top of all of that, I was pregnant, as well.”

Ask a bunch of teenagers what rules they would give their parents for raising them, and you’d probably expect carte blanche. And in some cases, of course, you’d be right. But teacher Mary Simmons discovered that, when you add it all up, the foremost thing teens ask from their parents isn’t a blank check, or even love. It’s discipline.

Each fall quarter, Bill Warner (Woodring College of Education) teaches an MBA course in Beijing, China. On Nov. 21, Warner travels to Beijing to teach “Managing Risk: Business and Project” at Beijing University of Technology. This is a dual-modality course of face-to-face seminars and online participation in Blackboard. Warner has also taught MBA courses at universities in Shanghai and Guangzhou, China.

Kristine Slentz, a professor in the Department of Special Education at WWU, presents "School and Family Life in Rural Kenya," a photo essay depicting school and family life in rural Kenya. The presentation integrates the survey results Slentz has obtained during her research into childrens behavior, school and family life in rural areas of Kenya.

Three-time choice Danielle Slaughter headed eight Western Washington University student-athletes named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country Academic All-Star Team announced Thursday, Nov. 12. Slaughter is a bio-chemistry major with a 3.69 (4.0 scale) grade point average. Two Vikings selected for the second straight year were Jordan Welling, a manufacturing and supply chain management major with a 3.60 GPA, and Maeve Sayres, a biology major with a 3.26 GPA.
